Grisaille

Grisaille

Grisaille is a painting technique where images are rendered in shades of gray, typically using monochromatic tones to create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. This technique often imitates the appearance of sculpture or relief carving, and it was commonly used in medieval and Renaissance art. Grisaille paintings can also incorporate subtle variations of color to enhance the illusion of volume and form. This technique is often seen in religious art, portraits, and decorative artworks, where the absence of color allows the viewer to focus on form, light, and shadow.
